Thought I’d write a quick post on what Reiki is NOT.
Reiki is NOT:
I get these two questions a lot. They are only natural questions to ask. I think people associate it with massage because I give Reiki sessions on a massage table. I place my hands on a person to promote healing and relaxation, but I am not applying pressure or working the muscles as a massage therapist would. I can even give Reiki without touching you at all!
Reiki is energy healing work. It works on the “energy body” we all have. I am not doing any “work” per se — just channeling healing energy to the person I am giving a Reiki session to. It can promote healing and it can relax you. Most of my friends who have grown to love Reiki and who beg me for it report that it relaxes them. They say they can feel my hands become hot and they can feel…something. Maybe it’s a tingling, but it’s always very subtle. Think of it like a gentle pulsing candle flame rather than a bolt of lightning.
Friends ask me to work on everything from headaches to sore knees. Reiki is Universal Life Force energy. It’s intelligent energy that does no harm; it goes where it needs to go. I just channel it as I have been attuned to it. It’s that simple.
Reiki is not a religion. Reiki has nothing to do with any religion, sect, or denomination. You can be any religion, any faith, or subscribe to any belief system and still benefit from Reiki. I do nothing religious with my clients. Reiki is a spiritual practice, not a religious one.
Reiki is nothing more than a healing art that is handed down from teacher to student through attunements. It has a rich history that began in Japan — something I can save for another blog post.
Please leave questions in the comments, I’d love to hear what they are!
