How is “Reiki” Pronounced?

I’ve heard “Reiki” mispronounced in every way now, so I feel it’s time to clear this up!

Let’s break it down into two syllable!

The first syllable is Rei, which is pronounced “ray” like a ray of light. This is fitting because we tend to channel in the light when we do Reiki on ourselves and on clients. “Rei” means “spiritual wisdom” in Japanese. Remember, this is a traditional Japanese healing technique. Please come with an open mind to other cultures. There are many words used in Reiki that are Japanese and hard for westerners to pronounce. “Reiki” is not one of them, sorry to say. There are far more difficult words in this art than this! “Rei” is a Japanese kanji (kanji = the letter forms of the Japanese alphabet) for Spiritual Wisdom.

(I don’t speak or write Japanese. However, my two semesters of Arabic in college taught me to have a great respect for languages with a different alphabet and letter forms than my own).

This is the Japanese kanji for Reiki (in Tenyso style) from page 2 of the ICRT manual for Reiki 1 & 2.

What does “Ki” mean?

“Ki” means “Life Energy.” In this context, it is the same as “Chi,” which you may be familiar with. Chi is the Chinese word for “biofield energy.” Ki is your life energy, your life force. According to the ICRT manual, Ki “is the non-physical energy that animates all living things. As long as something is alive, it has life energy circulating through it and surrounding it; when it dies, the life energy departs.”

Everything is energy and the energy never dies. (Little Black Eyed Peas album reference there for music nerds like myself).

“Ki” is pronounced “key” like house key.

I say this is pretty significant because your energy really is the key to everything!

So Reiki, pronounced “ray-key,” is Spiritual Wisdom and Life Energy. I am going for the most literal form here. What Reiki is, is this: It’s a traditional Japanese healing technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. The healing is your job — when you come to me for a Reiki session, you will be relaxed. But I do not promise to heal you. Reiki will promote you along your healing path, whatever that is to you and however you choose to promote it.
